Fuel System Primary Filter - Clean/Inspect/Replace

Note: TheenginestartswitchmustbeintheOFF
position in order to prime the fuel system.
1. Open purge screw (4).
2. Hold switch (3) upward in order to operate the
electric fuel priming pump. This will ll the engine
fuel lines and the fuel lters with fuel.
3. Operate the priming pump until the ow of fuel is
free of air bubbles. Do not operate the pump for
more than two minutes.
4. Close the purge screw.
5. Continue to ope
rate the priming pump in order to
build fuel pressure. As the fuel pressure increases,
the priming pump will come under load. Listen
for the primin
g pump to come under load. Do not
continue priming the fuel system after the priming
pump is under load. Do not operate the pump for
more than two
minutes.
Note: The priming pump will not come under load
until the pu
rge screw has been tightened.
6. Start the engine. If the engine starts but the engine
runs rough,
continue to run the engine at low
idle until the engine runs smoothly. If the engine
will not start after several attempts, consult your
Caterpill
ar dealer.

NOTICE
Do n ot ll fuel lter with fuel before installing the fuel
lter. Contaminated fuel causes accelerated wear to
fuel system parts.
NOTICE
Care m
ust be taken to ensure that uids are contained
during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
coll
ect the uid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing uids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies
suit
able to collect and contain uids on Caterpillar
products.

pose of all uids according to local regulations and
mandates.
1. Park the machine on a level surface. Ensure that
th
e parking brake is fully engaged. Lower the truck
body or OEM attachment and stop the engine.
2. Ra
ise the hood. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, “Hood Control”.
