Fuel System - Prime
Check the mount
s for cracks and for damage. If
damage is visible, contact your Caterpillar dealer for
more information.
Note: Inspect the mounts for the suspension after
the initial 2000 service hours and every 250 service
hours therea

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or elec-
trical com
ponents can cause a re. Clean up fuel
spills immediately.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that uids are contained
during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
collect the uid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing uids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain uids on Caterpillar
products.
Dispose of all uids according to local regulations and
mandates.
Prime the fuel system in order to ll the fuel lter with
fuel. It is necessary to prime the fuel system after the
fuel lters have been changed.
Park the machine on a level surface and engage
the parking brake. Lower the truck body or OEM
attachment and stop the engine.
Raise the hood. Refer to Operation and Maintenance
Manual, “Hood Control”.

2. Turn the priming pump plunger (1)
count
erclockwise in order to unlock the
plunger. Manually pump the plunger. This will ll
the engine fuel lines and the fuel lters with fuel.
3. Operate the priming pump until the ow of fuel is
free of air bubbles.
4. Close the purge screw.
5. Cont
inue to operate the priming pump in order
to build fuel pressure. This will create resistance
in the plunger. Operate the priming pump until
res
istance is felt.
Note: Resistance will not be felt until the purge screw
has
been tightened.
6. Push in the plunger. Turn the plunger clockwise in
or
der to lock the plunger.
7. Start the engine. If the engine starts but the engine
ru
ns rough, continue to run the engine at low
idle until the engine runs smoothly. If the engine
will not start after several attempts, consult your
C
aterpillar dealer.
