Differential and Final Drive Oil
- Change
SMCS Code : 3258-044; 4050-044
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that uids are contained
during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-
ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to
collect the uid with suitable containers before open-
ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-
nent containing uids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar
Tools and Shop Products Guide” for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain uids on Caterpillar
products.
Dispose of all uids according to local regulations and
mandates.
1. Operate the machine until the differential oil is
warm. Park the machine on a level surface.

2. Slo
wly move the machine until plug (1) is at the
lowest point on the rear left nal drive. Engage the
parking brake and shut off the engine.
3. Wipe the area around plug (1) on the nal drive.
Remove plug (1). Rem ove the plug slowly in o rder
to
gradually release any system pressure. Allow
the oil to drain into a suitable container.
4. Cl
ean plug (1) and inspect the O-ring seal for
damage. Lubricate the O-ring seal with gear oil
and install the plug.
Note: The plug is magnetic. Check the plug for
ferrous particles that may indicate wear of the
d
ifferential and nal drive components.
5. Start the engine and disengage the parking brake.
6. Repeat Step 2 th
rough Step 4 for the rear right
nal drive.

7. Remove drain plug (2) and level plug (3) from the
rear axle. Remove the drain plug slowly in order to
gradually release any system pressure. Allow the
oil to drain into a suitable container.
8. Clean the drain plug and inspect the O-ring seal
for damage. Lubricate the O-ring seal with gear oil
and install the drain plug.
Note: The drain plug is magnetic. Check the plug
for ferrous particles that may indicate wear of the
differential and nal drive components.
9. Start the engine and disengage the parking brake.

10. Slowly move the machine until “Oil Level” mark
(4
) on the rear right nal drive is horizontal.
Engage the parking brake and shut off the engine.

Re
move plug (1) from the front right nal drive
and add oil to the nal drive. Refer to Operation
and Maintenance Manual, “Capacities (Rell)” and
O
peration and Maintenance Manual, “Lubricant
Viscosities”.
